Eligibility for Military School admission 2026 (who can apply)

Our country has five Rashtriya Military schools situated across varied geographical locations. Primary aim of RMS is to train its cadets to join Indian Armed Forces in the officer cadre. Rashtriya Military Schools accept both boys & girls in class 6 and class 9 via a common national level entrance test. Following is the official date of birth chart for upcoming entrance exam in December 2025.

For Class 6: Child should be born from 01 April 2014 to 31 March 2016 (applicable for both boys & girls)

For Class 9: Child should be born from 01 April 2011 to 31 March 2013 (applicable for both boys & girls)

Important Note: Six months relaxation in upper age limit is permissible for the wards of personnel Killed in Action (KIA) for admission to Class VI and Class IX respectively.

Timeline of RMS 2026-27 application process

RMS conduct an OMR (Optical mark recognition) based entrance exam to qualify students. Following is the timeline for Rashtriya Military School online application process for academic year 2026-27. Please note that this information is tentative. It might be changed by authorities as per desirous convenience of students.

Scheme of marks in Rashtriya Military Schools

Rashtriya Military Schools conduct written exam on OMR Sheet for class 6 & class 9 applicants. Following are the details for class 6 & class 9.

For class 6: English carries 50 questions worth 1 mark each. However, score in english subject is not counted towards merit. Intelligence (Reasoning) subject carries 50 questions worth 50 marks. Mathematics subject carries 50 questions worth 50 marks & then finally, we have General Knowledge. Sometimes called GK & Current affairs, this subject carries 50 questions worth 50 marks. In totality: RMS Class 6 entrance exam has 200 questions worth 200 marks.

For class 9: English carries 50 questions worth 1 mark each. Then we have an additional subject as Hindi with 20 questions worth 20 marks. Social Science Carries 30 questions worth 30 marks. There is no Intelligence (Reasoning) subject for class 9. Mathematics subject carries 50 questions worth 50 marks. Science subject carries 50 questions worth 50 marks. In totality: RMS Class 9 entrance exam has 200 questions worth 200 marks. Applicants who qualify in written exam have to undergo a compulsory interview which carries 50 marks in final merit list.

Reservation of Seats in RMS

Primarily these schools are inclined towards education of wards of serving & retired servicemen from armed forces. Based on this, following is the calculation of seats available for academic year 2026-27

(a) 70% Defence [ for wards of JCOs/OR of Army, Navy and Air Force (including ex-servicemen) ].
(b) 30% Civilian [ for wards of Officers of Army, Navy & AF and wards of civilians ].
(c) A max of 50 seats in all classes put together are earmarked for category “Killed in Action” in all five RMS’s together at any point of time.

Important : 27%, 15% and 7.5% seats are reserved for OBC (Non Creamy Layer), SC and ST candidates respectively in all categories. For Class 6th & 9th, 10% seats or 30 vacancies maximum (put together in all 05 RMSs) are reserved for Girl candidates.

Fee structure of RMS in 2025

Rashtriya military schools are considered to be very affordable yet tough to get into schools. Education in these schools is primarily sponsored/facilitated by ministry of defence.
