Sainik Schools: Introduction & History
The Sainik Schools are a group of Military Public residential Schools in India. The plan to establish Sainik schools was introduced in 1961 with the primary aim to train its cadets to join National Defence Academy (NDA) & Indian Naval Academy (NA).
Since their inception, Sainik schools along with 1 RIMC Dehradun and 5 RMS (Rashtriya military schools) have come a long way to fulfil their primary purpose of sending their cadets to Indian Armed Forces.
As of 2023, there are 33 Sainik Schools (Old), 18 New Sainik Schools (under PPP mode), One Capt Manoj Pandey UP Sainik School Lucknow, One Sainik School Manasbal (J&K). All Old plus New Sainik schools are governed by Sainik School Society with the exception of UP Sainik School Lucknow.

Eligibility for Sainik School entrance exam 2024?
Primarily there are two entry points for admission in All India Sainik Schools.
Class 6 Entry, Class 9 Entry
For Class 6 entry, Child could be studying in either class 5 or class 6. For All India Sainik School Entrance Exam 2024, Child’s date of birth should be between 01 April 2012 to 31 March 2014 (both boys and girls). State of the domicile doesn’t matter.
For Class 9 entry, Child could be studying in either class 8 or class 9. For All India Sainik School Entrance Exam 2024, Child’s date of birth should be between 01 April 2009 to 31 March 2011 (Boys only). Again State of domicile doesn’t matter.

What is the cost of Sainik School Education?
Education in All India Sainik Schools is promoted and subsidised by the government of India. Although Sainik Schools have a fair degree of autonomy in deciding their fee structure, Sainik School Society anchors fee charges in such a manner as to keep fees affordable for general masses and students from modest backgrounds.

The fees structure for most All India Sainik Schools lies in the range of 1.40 lakh to 1.70 lakh. As of 2023, following are the various charges applicable in All India Sainik Schools (example attached)
Sainik School Scholarship Complete Information
All Sainik Schools run scholarship schemes which are made available on two levels:
1) Central Government Scheme : Central Government or Ministry of Defence grants scholarships to sons of serving / Ex-Service personnel up to the rank of Junior Commissioned Officers and Other Ranks of the Army and equivalent ranks in the Navy and the Air Force.
2) State Government Scheme : Every state has made available scholarships for cadets at Sainik Schools on the basis of merit and need. These schemes are regularly updated, made available or unavailable depending on the policies of the ruling party of a given state.
Please note: Scholarships get tricky in case a child is studying in a Sainik school of another state (apart from his home state). For example: Attached is Table with Scholarship details of Sainik School Kapurthala 2024 (home state) students.
